Organizing Work with Projects and Sections

Overview

Projects are how you group related tasks under a shared goal, and Sections break a project into phases or buckets. Together they turn a flat list of tasks into structured work you can navigate and report on.

Projects

A project collects tasks under one name — a launch, a client, a quarter, an initiative. On the Projects view, each project shows:

• Its title and description.
• A live task count and section count.
• Its sections and the tasks within them.

Sections

Sections divide a project into ordered buckets — for example, Backlog → In progress → Review, or Content → Design → Go-live. A task can belong to a project and, within it, a section. Sections have their own order, so you control how phases read top to bottom.

Steps: set up a project

1. Open Projects from the left rail.
2. Create a new project and give it a clear title (e.g. "Acme Launch").
3. Add sections for the phases the work moves through.
4. Create tasks (or move existing ones) into the project, choosing a section for each.
5. Watch the task count and section count update as you add work.

Steps: move a task into a project

1. Open the task (from any view).
2. Set its Project field to the target project.
3. Choose a Section within that project.
4. Save. The task now appears under that project and section on the Projects view.

Concrete example

A marketing team runs every campaign as a project. For "Spring Promo" they create sections Plan, Produce, and Publish. Tasks like "Draft campaign brief" go in Plan, "Design email templates" and "Write ad copy" go in Produce, and "Schedule sends" goes in Publish. On the Projects view they can see at a glance that Produce has the most open tasks, so that's where they focus resources this week.

Tips

• Use projects for goals with a clear beginning and end; use labels for themes that cut across many projects.
• Keep sections few and meaningful — phases of the work, not a home for every tiny distinction.
• The task and section counts on the Projects view are a quick health check: a project with a huge count in one section may be stuck.

Troubleshooting

• A task isn't showing under its project. Confirm the task's Project field is set. A task with no project belongs to no grouping and appears only in the general views.
• My sections are in the wrong order. Sections have a sort order — reorder them so phases read top-to-bottom the way the work actually flows.
• I moved a task but the count didn't change. Counts are live but read on load; refresh the Projects view to reconcile.
