Who can see and edit your sheets
StretchSheets access is governed by StretchSuite's tenancy and permission model. Understanding it helps you give the right people access and explains the messages someone might hit when they can't get in. There are three layers: organization scoping, roles, and the Sheets app permission.
1. Organization scoping
Every workbook belongs to exactly one organization. StretchSheets runs behind the workspace gateway, which identifies your organization on each request and independently confirms your membership on the server. The result:
- You only ever see and edit workbooks in your organization.
- A workbook or link from another organization is simply not accessible to you (and yours aren't accessible to them).
- This is enforced server-side, not just in the browser, so scoping can't be bypassed by editing a URL.
2. Roles
Your membership in an organization carries a role. For StretchSheets:
- Owners and admins always have access to StretchSheets.
- Other roles (regular members) need the Sheets app explicitly enabled on their membership (see below).
3. The Sheets app permission
Beyond role, each member's access to individual apps is controlled by an allowed apps list on their membership. To use StretchSheets, a non-admin member must have Sheets in their allowed apps. If they don't, they'll be told they don't have access to the app.
How to give someone access
- An owner or admin opens your organization's membership settings in StretchSuite.
- Find the member who needs access.
- Either confirm they hold an owner/admin role, or add Sheets to their allowed apps.
- Make sure their membership status is Active.
- Ask them to reopen StretchSheets — access takes effect on their next session.
A realistic example
A new operations analyst joins and needs the inventory workbooks. As an admin, you open the organization's memberships, find her account, confirm her status is Active, and add Sheets to her allowed apps. She refreshes her workspace, opens StretchSheets, and immediately sees the organization's inventory workbooks — scoped to your organization and nothing else. A contractor from a partner company, who belongs to a different organization, never sees any of it.
Tips
- Grant the Sheets app only to members who need it — least privilege keeps sensitive numbers contained.
- Owners and admins don't need the app added explicitly; they always have access.
- If someone's access looks wrong, check three things in order: are they in the right organization, is their membership Active, and do they have the Sheets app (or an admin role)?
Troubleshooting
- "You do not have access to this workspace app." The member's role isn't owner/admin and Sheets isn't in their allowed apps. Add it (or adjust their role).
- "You are not a member of the requested workspace." The account isn't an active member of that organization. Confirm the membership exists and is Active.
- "A workspace user is required." The request arrived without an identified user — have them sign in to the workspace again and retry.
- "Unable to verify workspace access" (temporary). A transient check failure; retry shortly. If it persists, contact StretchSupport.
- "Authenticated organization is required." The session didn't carry an organization — reopening the workspace usually resolves it.
FAQ
Do admins need the Sheets app turned on?
No. Owners and admins always have access; the allowed-apps list applies to other members.
Can two organizations share a workbook?
No. Workbooks are strictly scoped to a single organization and can't be shared across tenants. To move data between organizations, export to CSV/XLSX and import on the other side.
Who can delete workbooks?
Members with access to a workbook can delete it (a soft delete). Use roles and the Sheets permission to control who that is.
