Working with the Roadmap Board

Master the drag-and-drop Kanban board — moving cards between stages, adding items to columns, inspecting cards, and refreshing.

Overview

The Roadmap board is the heart of StretchProjects — a drag-and-drop Kanban where each column is a delivery stage and each card is a work item. Moving a card between stages is how you signal progress, and every move is saved and logged so the whole team stays in sync.

The stages

The master roadmap uses eight stages, left to right:

  1. Backlog — captured but not yet planned
  2. Planned — scheduled for delivery
  3. Ready — ready to be picked up
  4. In Progress — actively being worked
  5. Review — awaiting review or sign-off
  6. Blocked — stuck on a dependency
  7. Released — shipped
  8. Deferred — intentionally postponed

Workspace project boards use a shorter five-stage flow (Backlog → Planned → In Progress → Review → Released). Either way, each column header shows the stage name, a count of cards in it, and a + button to add an item directly to that stage.

Move a card between stages

  1. Open Roadmap board from the left rail.
  2. Drag a card and drop it onto the target column. The drop zone highlights with a dashed outline as you hover.
  3. The board updates optimistically — the card appears in the new column immediately.
  4. The move is saved, the card's status updates to match the new stage, and the move is logged as an activity event ("Moved from X to Y").

Tip: Prefer a more deliberate, keyboard-friendly move? Every card has a Move to stage dropdown near the bottom. Selecting a new stage runs exactly the same move — it's the accessible fallback for drag-and-drop.

Where the card lands in the column

A moved card is placed at the end of its new column. If you want a specific order within a stage, move the highest-priority cards last, or reorder after the move.

Example

A developer finishes coding "Page SEO restoration." They drag its card from In Progress to Review. The card jumps columns instantly, its status flips to review, the Review count ticks up, and an activity entry records the move for the rest of the team.

Add an item to a specific stage

  1. On the board, click the + on the column header for the stage you want (for example, Backlog).
  2. The New item form opens with that column pre-selected.
  3. Fill in the Title (required) and any other fields, then create it.

Alternatively, click New item in the board toolbar to start a card, then change the Column / status field in the form. A card created without choosing a stage defaults to Planned.

Open and inspect a card

Click any card to open its detail panel. Cards show at a glance:

  • Item type and title
  • A short description
  • The owner and a priority chip
  • Documentation flags — KB, Ops Doc, Changelog — when set
  • A Target release date when one is set

From the detail panel you can edit every field, reassign the work, link a customer, collaborate, review the item's history, or delete it.

Refresh the board

Click Refresh in the board toolbar to re-pull the authoritative board from the server. This resyncs card order, statuses, and any moves made by teammates since you opened the board.

Tips

  • Read the board left to right at standup — anything sitting too long in one stage is your discussion topic.
  • Use Blocked (roadmap) instead of leaving stuck work in In Progress so blockers are visible.
  • After a burst of activity, click Refresh to make sure you're seeing teammates' latest moves.

Troubleshooting

A card I dragged snapped back to its original column.
The move couldn't be saved, so StretchProjects reverted it and showed a message explaining why. Common causes: the authorization was cancelled (admin surface), or a network hiccup. Try the move again and complete any prompt.

Warning: If a move can't be saved, StretchProjects automatically reverts the card to where it was and shows the reason. You'll never be left with a card that looks moved but wasn't.
