Creating and editing courses

Create a course from scratch, fill in every field that shapes its catalog card and public page, and edit its details from the Builder or Records view.

Overview

Courses are the core of StretchLearn. This guide covers creating a new course and editing an existing one — its title, catalog summary, learning outcomes, difficulty, images, tags, instructor, public page copy, SEO, status, and visibility.

Create a new course

  1. In StretchLearn, click the blue New button at the top of the left rail. It's available from any view.
  2. In the New course prompt, enter a Title and confirm. This is required — a course with no title won't be created.
  3. In the Course summary prompt, enter a concise catalog blurb. This is the line learners see on the course card.
  4. In the Learning outcomes prompt, list what learners will be able to do after finishing. Separate outcomes with commas or new lines.
  5. StretchLearn creates the course as a Draft with public visibility, a default level of beginner, and selects it for you.

Example

Title: Operator Certification
Summary: Train operators and gate certificates on proof of skill.
Outcomes: Run the daily checklist, Escalate incidents correctly, Pass the final quiz

This produces a draft course card reading "Train operators and gate certificates on proof of skill," with three learning outcomes attached, ready for you to add modules and lessons.

Tip: Keep the summary to one sentence in plain language. It's the first thing a prospective learner reads, so lead with the outcome, not the mechanics.

Edit an existing course

  1. Open the Catalog or Records view and click a course's title to select it (the row highlights).
  2. Click Edit on that row — or open the Builder view and click Edit course.
  3. Update the Title when prompted, then the Summary.
  4. Adjust any other fields exposed in the edit flow (see the field reference below).
  5. In the Publishing status prompt, set the status to draft, published, or archived.
  6. Confirm. Your changes save and the course refreshes in the table.

Every course field, and what it does

A course carries far more than a title. These fields shape the catalog card, the public course page, and how the course is found:

FieldPurpose
TitleThe course name shown everywhere.
SummaryThe short catalog blurb on the course card.
Card summaryAn alternate shorter blurb used on compact cards.
DescriptionThe longer body describing the course.
Learning outcomesWhat a learner can do after finishing (shown as a list).
LevelDifficulty — e.g. beginner, intermediate, advanced.
Estimated durationTotal minutes, used for runtime totals and learning-path math.
Cover image / Hero imageArtwork for the catalog card and the public page header.
Topic tags / Skill tagsKeywords for grouping and discovery.
Category / NicheUsed to package courses into learning paths and to filter the catalog.
Instructor nameThe person credited as teaching the course.
Public headline / subheadlineMarketing copy at the top of the public course page.
Overview bodyThe long-form pitch on the public page.
SEO title / SEO descriptionSearch-engine metadata for the public page.
Catalog badgeA small label like New or Popular on the card.
Catalog sort orderWhere the course sits in the catalog ordering.
Featured / Homepage featuredWhether the course is promoted in the catalog or on the homepage.
Statusdraft, published, or archived.
Visibilitypublic or internal.
Preview enabled / Preview lesson limitWhether non-enrolled visitors can sample lessons, and how many.
Member access levelThe account level required to access the full course (e.g. registered).

Tip: You don't need every field at once. Title, summary, and outcomes are enough to start. Fill in public headline, overview body, and SEO fields when you're preparing to promote the course.

Review a course in the Builder

The Builder view gives one selected course its own screen:

  • The header shows the course title and a status chip.
  • Outcomes and proof lists each learning outcome, mapped to lessons, assessments, and certificate readiness.
  • The modules and lessons area is where you add and reorder content.
  • Lifecycle buttons — Edit course, Publish, Delete — act on the selected course without leaving the view.

Tip: If the Builder shows "Select a course," go to Catalog or Records and click a course title first — the Builder always works on the currently selected course.

Archiving vs deleting

  • Archive (set status to archived, or use Delete on the row, which archives) retires a course from the live catalog while keeping its records intact. This is the safe default.
  • Archived courses no longer appear to learners but remain in your catalog table filtered by status.

Troubleshooting

  • "Course title is required." You submitted the New or Edit flow with an empty title. Enter a title and retry.
  • My edit didn't save. Confirm you clicked through the final confirmation. Also confirm you have authoring permission — only teammates with StretchLearn management access can create, edit, publish, or archive courses.
  • The course won't appear for learners. Check its status is published and its visibility is public (or that the intended learners have access if it's internal).

Tips

  • Write outcomes as verbs — "Run the daily checklist" beats "Understand checklists."
  • Set a realistic estimated duration; it feeds the runtime totals learners and you both rely on.
  • Add a catalog badge like New to draw attention to a fresh course, and remove it once it's established.
