Generating a Form with AI

Overview

Instead of adding fields one at a time, you can describe the form you want in a sentence or two and let StretchForms draft it for you. The AI form builder proposes a title, an optional description, and a complete set of fields — each with a label, a type, whether it's required, a placeholder, and choice options where relevant. It's the fastest way to get from idea to first draft.

AI generation is available where your workspace has the forms AI capability enabled. If you don't see the option, ask your administrator to enable it.

How it works

1. Open New form and choose Generate with AI (or the AI/sparkle option in the builder).
2. Type a plain-English description of what you're collecting. Be specific about the fields you care about.
3. Submit the prompt. StretchForms returns a draft — a proposed title and a list of fields.
4. Review the draft, edit anything, add or remove fields, and Save. The draft becomes a normal Draft form you can refine and publish.

The generated form is a draft only — nothing is published or made live until you save and activate it, so you always get the final say.

Writing a good prompt

The more specific your description, the better the draft:

• Name the purpose: "A client onboarding form for a marketing agency."
• List the fields you know you want: "Collect company name, website, monthly budget as a dropdown, primary goal, and a long description of the project."
• Mention required vs optional and any choices: "Budget options: under $2k, $2k–$10k, $10k+. Make company name and email required."

Example prompt and result

Prompt: "Create a job application form for a cafe. Ask for the applicant's name, email, phone, the position they want (barista, server, or kitchen), their availability by day, years of experience as a number, and a short cover note."

Draft returned:

• Full name — short text, required
• Email — email, required
• Phone — phone, required
• Position — dropdown (Barista, Server, Kitchen), required
• Availability — long text
• Years of experience — number
• Cover note — long text

From there you might add a consent checkbox, tighten a label, and publish.

After generation

Treat the AI draft as a strong starting point, not a finished product:

1. Check the field types — switch anything that should be Email, Number, Date, or Dropdown to the right type.
2. Set required rules to match your policy.
3. Add consent if you collect personal data.
4. Add routing — set the form type and destination so responses land with the right team.

Tips

• Iterate. If the first draft isn't quite right, refine your prompt with the specific fields and options you want and generate again.
• You own the result. Nothing is saved until you save it, so experiment freely.
• Combine AI with the builder. Generate the skeleton, then hand-tune it with conditional logic, validation, and steps.

Troubleshooting

The AI option isn't available. AI generation is flag-gated per workspace and depends on the AI service being ready. Ask your administrator to enable the forms AI capability.

The generator returned nothing / an empty result. This usually means the AI model was momentarily unavailable or the prompt was empty. Add a clear description and try again in a moment — the feature fails safe and never blocks manual building.

FAQ

Does AI generation publish the form automatically? No. It only produces a draft; you review, edit, save, and activate it yourself.

Is my prompt used to change existing forms? No. Generation produces a fresh draft; it never modifies your live forms or submissions.
