Troubleshooting StretchDrive Errors

Diagnose and resolve common StretchDrive errors — access denied, quota exceeded, upload failures, and sharing problems.

When something goes wrong in StretchDrive, the error usually tells you exactly what happened. This reference maps the most common problems to their cause and fix.

Access and permission errors

"You do not have access to this workspace app." Your membership doesn't have the Files app enabled. Owners and admins have Drive automatically; other members need Files turned on. Ask a workspace owner to enable it for you.

"You are not a member of the requested workspace." Your account isn't an active member of that organization. Confirm you're signed in to the right workspace and that your membership is active.

"You cannot view / edit / share this file." You lack the required role on that item. Viewing needs Viewer, editing and sharing need Editor, and deleting needs Owner. Ask someone with sufficient rights to grant you access — ideally on the parent folder so it inherits.

"You cannot grant a role above your own." You tried to give someone a higher role than you hold. You can only grant up to your own level (and links max out at Editor). An Owner must make the grant if Owner access is required.

Upload errors

"A valid total_size is required" / "A valid upload offset is required." The upload didn't start or continue cleanly. Refresh Drive and start the upload again so the session initializes correctly.

"Upload exceeds the maximum allowed size." The file is over the 5 GB single-file limit. Compress or split it, then upload the parts.

"Drive quota would be exceeded." The upload won't fit in your organization's remaining storage. Delete files you don't need and empty Trash to reclaim space, prune old versions, or ask an owner to upgrade the plan — then retry.

"Upload chunk offset does not match the session cursor" (out of order). A chunk arrived at the wrong position. Re-open the upload so it resumes from the last confirmed byte instead of an incorrect offset; resuming is safe and won't duplicate data.

"Upload checksum mismatch" / "Upload part checksum mismatch." Data was corrupted in transit. Retry the upload — the integrity check exists to stop damaged files from being stored.

"Upload parts do not match declared total size" (incomplete). The upload was completed before all bytes arrived. Let the transfer finish, or restart it if the connection was lost.

My upload session expired. Sessions last 24 hours. If you abandoned an upload longer ago than that, start it fresh.

A share link says it's invalid or won't open. The link may have been revoked or expired, or it's password-protected and no password was entered. Ask the sender for a current link and the password if needed.

"This share link does not allow downloads." The link was published as view-only. Ask the owner to enable downloads or provide the file another way.

I revoked a link but worry about copies. Revoking stops future access, but files already downloaded can't be recalled. Use short expiry and view-only links to limit exposure going forward.

Preview errors

"This file type cannot be previewed." The in-browser renderer supports text, Markdown, CSV/TSV, code, and common images. For PDFs, video, and office files, download them; for text/CSV files you can also Open in editor.

My text preview looks cut off. Text previews cover the first 2 MB. Open the full file in StretchDocs/StretchSheets or download it.

Trash and deletion errors

"Cannot restore a folder into a deleted parent." The parent folder is still in Trash. Restore the parent first (which brings this folder back with it).

I emptied Trash but storage didn't fully drop. Only items you're permitted to permanently delete are removed. Files owned by others need an owner/admin to clear them; and remember retained versions also occupy space.

I permanently deleted the wrong file. Permanent deletion is irreversible and removes all versions. This is why regular deletes go to Trash first — restore from there whenever possible.

Rate-limit errors

"Too many Drive requests." You've made a burst of uploads or downloads in a short window and hit a temporary rate limit. Wait a moment and try again; spacing out large batches avoids this.

When to escalate

If you see a service error such as "Unable to verify workspace access" or repeated failures that don't match the cases above, it may be a temporary platform issue. Wait a few minutes and retry; if it persists, contact your workspace administrator with the exact error message and what you were doing when it appeared.

Tips

  • Read the exact error text — most point straight to the cause.
  • For access issues, check both your workspace membership and your role on the specific item.
  • For quota issues, remember emptying Trash and pruning versions are what actually free space.
  • For flaky uploads, just retry — resume and checksums protect your data.
