What AI summaries do

Beyond the rule-based Document Intelligence analysis, StretchDocs offers an optional AI summary powered by the StretchSuite AI layer. Where the extractive summary pulls existing sentences, the AI summary writes a concise, plain-language overview of the document and then extracts:

• a short summary of what the document says,
• a list of key points, and
• a list of action items — the concrete follow-ups implied by the document.

It's ideal for turning a long meeting-notes document into a crisp recap, or a dense spec into a digestible brief.

Availability

AI summaries are a gated capability: they only run when the AI layer is enabled for your organization and the model is available. When it's off, StretchDocs simply doesn't offer the feature (or returns a clear "not available" state) — everything else in StretchDocs keeps working normally. This fail-safe design means AI is purely additive.

Generate an AI summary

1. Open the document you want summarized.
2. Choose AI summary (or Summarize with AI).
3. StretchDocs sends the document's text to the AI layer and returns a structured result: summary, key points, and action items.
4. Read the result and use it — paste the summary into an email, turn the action items into tasks, or drop the key points at the top of the document.

What good input looks like

The AI summary works best on documents that actually contain substance:

• Enough text. An empty or near-empty document has nothing to summarize.
• Clear content. Well-structured documents (headings, complete sentences) produce sharper summaries.
• Self-contained meaning. The model summarizes what's on the page, so make sure the important points are written down, not just implied.

A realistic example

After a 45-minute planning call, the coordinator has three pages of raw meeting notes. She clicks AI summary. Back comes a four-sentence summary, six key points ("Launch moved to August," "Design owns the new onboarding flow," …), and four action items ("Priya to confirm vendor pricing by Friday," …). She pastes the summary at the top of the notes, converts the action items into tasks, and shares the recap — all in under a minute.

Tips

• Use AI summaries on long or messy documents where a human recap would take real time.
• Treat the output as a draft — skim it for accuracy before you forward it.
• Combine with Document Intelligence: use the analysis to tighten structure, then the AI summary to produce the recap.
• Turn action items into real tasks so decisions don't evaporate after the meeting.

Troubleshooting

The AI summary option isn't showing. The AI layer isn't enabled for your organization, or the model is temporarily unavailable. Ask your administrator whether AI features are turned on for your plan.

I got an empty result. The document had too little text to summarize. Add content and try again.

The summary missed a key point. The model summarizes what's written. If a decision was only implied, add it explicitly to the document and re-run.

FAQ

Is my document content sent anywhere? AI summarization runs on the suite's shared AI layer under your organization's account. It's only invoked when you request a summary and when the feature is enabled.

How is this different from Document Intelligence? Document Intelligence is deterministic analysis (scores, readability, keywords, extractive summary). AI summaries are model-generated prose with key points and action items. They complement each other.
