Organizations, memberships, and you
Three concepts govern access on StretchSuite, and keeping them straight makes everything else clear:
- Account — your personal identity (name, email, password). It's you, and it exists independently of any company.
- Organization (also called a workspace) — a company or team on the platform. It owns data, a subscription, and a set of apps.
- Membership — the link that attaches your account to an organization, carrying your role (owner, admin, or member) in that organization.
You can hold many memberships at once. Each one is separate, with its own role and its own app access. Being an owner in one organization gives you no extra power in another.
What "context" means
At any moment your session has one active organization — the context. The dashboard resolves everything against that active organization: which apps appear, whose CRM and files you see, which invoices exist. This is why StretchSuite can keep multiple clients cleanly separated under a single account: only one organization's context is live at a time. See Switch between organizations and workspaces to change it.
Where to see your memberships
- Open /account.
- The Memberships card shows how many organizations you belong to.
- The Organization Memberships list shows each one: its label, its organization ID, your role, and whether it's the Active workspace or an Available workspace.
About the organization ID
Every organization has a unique organization ID — a stable identifier shown next to each membership on /account and /select-workspace. You rarely need it day to day, but it's the precise way to refer to a workspace when contacting support. If two organizations have similar names, the ID removes all ambiguity.
How you become a member
You don't join an organization by registering — registration only creates your personal account. Membership happens when an owner or admin of that organization invites your email and assigns you a role (see Invite and manage team members). Once your membership is active, the organization appears in your list and you can switch into it.
Realistic example
Deepa registered a personal account with deepa@freelance.dev. On her own she has no organization to work in — her memberships count is 0 and the selector shows "no active memberships." Then two clients add her: Larkspur Co makes her an admin, and Vault Fitness adds her as a member with access to just three apps. Now /account shows a memberships count of 2. In Larkspur she can invite others and open every entitled app; in Vault Fitness she can open only the three apps she was granted. Same account, two very different levels of access, kept apart by context.
Tips
- Your access is always per organization. Before assuming you can (or can't) do something, check which organization is active and what your role is there.
- Use the organization ID with support. It's the fastest way for support to find the exact workspace you mean.
- One person, one account. If a second company adds you, they should use your existing email so all your memberships live under one account. Don't register a duplicate.
Troubleshooting
- "No active workspace memberships were found." Your account exists but isn't attached to any active organization. Ask an owner/admin to add you, and confirm they used the exact email on your account.
- You were added but don't see the organization. The membership may not be active yet, or you were invited under a different email address. Verify the email on /account and have the admin re-check.
- You see an organization you don't recognize. If a workspace appears that you didn't expect, confirm with your admin how you were added; the organization ID helps identify it precisely.
FAQ
Can I leave an organization myself? Membership is managed by the organization's owner/admin. Ask them to remove your membership; once removed, that workspace no longer resolves for you.
Do I need a separate account for each company? No — that's the point of memberships. One account holds all your memberships, and you switch context between them.
Who can add or remove members? Owners and admins of the organization. Members cannot manage the roster. See Roles: owner, admin, and member explained.
